They are four questions wearing different clothes.

The Minor Arcana divide into four suits, and each suit describes a domain of experience. Learning those domains gives you a reliable starting point for the minor cards. When a PlayTarot world renames a suit, the underlying element and domain remain recognizable.

Water: the domain of feeling

Classically Cups: emotion, bonds, memory, intuition. The Inner Alchemy Tarot calls it the Waters: the fluids of the vessel, held without being frozen. The Inner Forest Tarot calls it the River: water that connects, carries, and changes with the season. The Light Heart Tarot calls it the Lotus: the flower-cup that opens on the water at dawn. One question: what is the heart doing?

Earth: the domain of matter

Classically Pentacles: body, work, money, time. In Inner Alchemy: Salt, the stable residue left after volatile material disperses. In Inner Forest: the Brazil Nut, named for a tree that feeds generations slowly. In The Light Heart: the Wheat, grain, granary, harvest. One question: what is taking material form?

Air: the domain of mind

Classically Swords: thought, word, judgment, conflict. In Inner Alchemy: Mercury, quicksilver, the mind that connects and evaporates. In Inner Forest: the Harpy, the harpy eagle of the Amazon, surveying a wide field from above, its keen sight and sharp talons reflecting discernment and conflict. In The Light Heart: the Reed Pen, the scribe’s sharpened reed, the word that records and cuts. One question: what story is the mind telling?

Fire: the domain of desire

Classically Wands: action, will, creation, drive. In Inner Alchemy: Sulfur, the combustible soul of a thing. In Inner Forest: the Jaguar, desire moving low and certain through the undergrowth. In The Light Heart: the Falcon, the hunting bird rising at the sun. One question: what wants to move?

Some traditions swap Swords and Wands between Air and Fire. We follow the Rider–Waite–Smith convention, which is the root every PlayTarot deck grows from. You can see all four elements together in the corners of the Wheel of Fortune.

How to use this in a reading

When two or three cards of the same suit land on your table, that repetition may show which domain deserves a closer look. Several Water cards can emphasize feeling or relationship; several Earth cards can emphasize body, work, time, or resources. Notice the pattern, then return to the individual images, positions, and question.

Which of the four domains has been running your week, and is it the one your attention has been living in?

Watch the suits at work: draw the Inner Compass in any world, and keep the <a
