A new month is a border crossing. Most of us sleepwalk across it carrying last month’s luggage, unopened.
October starts today. Here is a fifteen-minute ritual for the first week of any month. It offers a brief review of the month that ended and a deliberate opening for the one ahead.
Step one: the two-line review (no cards yet)
Write two lines about September. Line one: what actually mattered, not what was loudest but what mattered. Line two: what you’re still carrying: the unfinished conversation, the postponed decision, the feeling that didn’t get its hour. That second line is your luggage manifest. You’ll want it in a moment.
Step two: the reset question
Now frame one question for the reading. One useful monthly frame is: “What does October need from me that September didn’t get?” It is open, grounded in agency, and asks for no prophecy.
Step three: the Inner Compass as a month-crossing
Draw the Inner Compass with that question, and let the three houses do the border work:
The Blind Spot becomes what may still be outside your current account of September. The image can suggest another angle on the unfinished business you listed, without claiming to reveal a hidden fact.
The Mirror becomes a posture to consider in October: a quality you may choose to practice rather than a goal you must chase.
The Next Step becomes a possible first move for the month: one concrete action you could take during the first seven days.
Step four: leave a note for November
Date the page. Close your five-line entry with one sentence addressed to next month’s you: “By November, I hope you’ve…” If you return to the ritual in thirty days, reread that sentence first. It can help you compare your earlier hope with how the month unfolded.
Returning during the first week of each month can create twelve useful points of comparison across a year.
What does October need from you that September didn’t get?
Cross the border awake: draw the Inner Compass, three cards, one honest mirror. Choose your world. Your first reading is free.
