One of ancient Egypt’s most enduring funerary images places the heart beside the feather of Maat on a scale.
The Light Heart Tarot, our Egyptian tarot deck, is built around that image. It is one of the worlds of PlayTarot, where every deck retells the same 78 classic cards in a new skin. In the famous scene from the Book of the Dead, the heart is weighed against the feather of Maat. Maat embodies the order, truth and justice that hold the world together. The deck takes that image not as a threat about the afterlife, but as a gentle mirror for this life. What are you carrying that keeps the pan from rising?
One card, an Egyptian world
Like every PlayTarot deck, The Light Heart follows the classic 78-card Rider-Waite-Smith structure, card for card, with the classic name always readable beside the Egyptian one. The Fool becomes The First Morning: Zep Tepi, the world’s original dawn. The Chariot becomes The Solar Barque, the boat that carries the sun. Death becomes The Westward Crossing, the calm ferrying to the other bank. And Justice becomes The Weighing of the Heart, the deck’s signature card and its thesis.
The deck’s own shadow lives at card fifteen. Where the classic tarot has The Devil, The Light Heart has The Heavy Heart: everything hoarded, denied and unforgiven, sitting on the pan. The whole deck is the road between those two cards: from the heavy heart to the light one.
The four suits of the valley
The Lotus carries the domain of Cups: emotion and bond, the flower-cup that opens on the water. The Reed Pen carries Swords: mind, word and judgment, the scribe’s sharpened reed. The Falcon carries Wands: action and will, the hunting bird rising at the sun. The Wheat carries Pentacles: body, work and harvest, the grain and the granary.
The court follows the path of the temple and the kingdom: Novice, Messenger, Priestess, Vizier.
The one who enters, the one who carries, the one who masters within, and the one who governs in the world. In Egypt the vizier held a beautiful title: “priest of Maat.” Mastery, in this deck, means serving the balance.
